FACULTY OF VETERINARY MEDICINE
The faculty offers veterinary studies.
Single course, 5.5 years studies for foreigners, leading to the Master of Veterinary Medicine.
The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine follows in the footsteps of the former Veterinary School and Veterinary Academy (1881-1949). Till 1949 the veterinary medicine was the single specialty at the University. It became a faculty when the second one (the faculty of Animal Husbandry) was opened at the University. At present the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is one of five full-time faculties at Lviv State University of Veterinary Medicine.
Since 2000 the Faculty has been a member of European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education.
About 1250 students study Veterinary Medicine here. The teaching process is carried out by academicians, professors and doctors of sciences, associate professors, senior lecturers, assistants. To improve the educational and clinical training helps the University polyclinic of Veterinary Medicine and there are specialized clinics at the departments of obstetrics, surgery, internal diseases, epizootology, parasitology where the ill small and large animals as well as poultry are treated.
Basic humanitarian and biological disciplines are studied in the first and the second years. From the third year the study of clinical disciplines starts. The students of the first-fourth courses have the educational practice, after the fourth year and at the fifth year they have the professional practice.
The students who display interest in scientific work take part in the Students' Society of the faculty. According to their choice they can join up with scientific research from even the first year. Beginning from the 3r year the students can make experiments at the departments of clinical disciplines, master new methods of patients' examination, use the modem diagnostic equipment. The students can publish their results in periodicals.
The student scientific conferences are held yearly, where the students present their research works. They also take part in the inter-university and international scientific conferences.
The best faculty graduates can be directed by the Scientific Council of the University for postgraduate study (3 years).
The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is authorized to confer university degree - Doctor (Candidate) and Doctor Habilitatus (Doctor of Sciences) in Veterinary Medicine.
Veterinary medicine aims at protection of health and receiving of high productivity of farm animals and at protection of human health (Hominum animaliumque saluti — such words are written on the front wall of main building of the University). This goal can be achieved with medical care and prophylactics and fighting with infectious diseases which can be dangerous to human health as well as by means of sanitary control of animal products.
