Visa support

Foreign citizens willing to study at Lviv State University of Veterinary Medicine apply to International Affairs Office for official "Invitation to Study". In order to get "Invitation to Study" candidates have to present all the documents, mentioned in § 3 (Admission documents required),

Candidates have to send copies of those documents to the e-mail: vetacademy@hotmail.com or
by Fax: 380 (322) 98 68 90, 75 65 51.
After documents' examination, in case of positive decision -
official "Invitation to Study" will be issued and sent to the Candidate. In some cases the University
can propose to the Candidate payment in advance, before sending the Invitation.
As a rule this document is sent by Federal Express rapid delivery mail. For this purpose it is necessary
to have an exact mailing address, phone/fax number of the Candidate. Due to courier service the
"Invitation" will be received by the Candidate in 3-5 days. After coming to Ukraine the expenses for
delivery are to be reimbursed to the University. k

Simultaneously, International Affairs Office prepares and sends to the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine information about applicant for legal reasons of issuing the "Student Visa" and legal crossing the border by the applicant. Having got the "Invitation to Study" foreign candidates have to apply to the Ukrainian Embassy for obtaining Student Visa. To apply for "Student Visa" one must have the original of "Invitation to Study" and originals of documents, mentioned above. Before arriving to Ukraine applicants have to inform the International Affairs Office about exact date, time and way of coming (plane, train, etc.), because he must be met by the Official University Representative and it is necessary to prepare for such meeting special letters for Immigration Office.

After arrival in Ukraine, passing the Entrance Interview, signing the "Contract for Study" and paying Tuition and Hostel Fees, student will get the Registration in Police Department.

Medical insurance

Foreign students are obligated to have valid health and accident insurance. University uses DASK "Ukrinmedstrakh" - Ukrainian State Company Rendering emergency medical aid to the foreign citizens, which is guarantee of quality and in-time rendering of medical aid. This Company co-operates with 820 medical establishments in Ukraine, which are selected according to the reference of Ministry of Health of Ukraine and referred to policlinic and out-patient establishments with higher-qualified experts. The medical insurance costs 100 US$ but foreign students of our University pay only 65$.



The legal system of Ukrainian education

All the educational programs are regulated by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine. The diplomas and cer­tificates issued to graduated foreign students by the Lviv State University of Veterinary Medicine named after S.Z.Gzhytskyj are legalized by the Ministry of International Affairs of Ukraine.

How to get to Lviv by Plane

The city of Lviv has an airport servicing both domestic and international flights.

The city has air connections with Warsaw (Warsaw Frederic Chopin Airport - WAW), Toronto, Manchester, Vienne, Frankfurt-am-Main, and several airports in Russia, Caucasus and Middle Asia.

The most frequent services are daily flights to and from Warsaw and Kyiv; on twice weekly on Tuesdays and Fridays to and from Frankfurt.

Getting from the airport

The best way to get to the University (Academy) of Veterinary Medicine is to order a radio taxi by telephone on arrival (39 34 34 or 39 33 33), which will be much cheaper

than taking one of the cabs standing in front of the airport. The journey to the Academy will cost

some UAH 15.00.

Alternatively by public transport you could take a number 9 trolley-bus (UAH 0.50) or the taxi-bus

number 95 (UAH 0.80) called "marsh-rutka" that leaves from the stop opposite the airport entrance

and goes to the city centre too.

How to get to Lviv by Train

Geographically Lviv lies on the crossroads from West to the East and is connected

with many other cities via an extensive railway system. The simplest way to buy an international ticket is at one of the hotels in the city. Alternatively Inter­city tickets can be bought at a booking-office on the ground floor of the Railway Station. There is also a Railway Booking Office in the centre of Lviv at 20, Hnatyuka St. Train Schedule 005 or 748-20-68.

Climate Climate here is moderate continental: January -4 C (26.6 F), June +18 C (64.9 F). Annual rainfall: 26 inches with an average of 66 cloudy days per year.

Time differences Ukraine is in one time zone, two hours later Greenwich Mean Time. The country observes daylight saving time from the first Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October by advancing

the clocks one hour in April and by retreating the clocks an hour in October.

Time differences are: London - 2 hours, New York - 7 hours, Warsaw - 1 hour.

Currency

Ukraine's national currency is the Hryvnia (UAH), which currently is equal to about $0.18.

You can exchange foreign currency for Hryvnias at many exchange points located throughout the city. The value of the Ukrainian Hryvnia for May 2003 is as following and may be fluctuated: 1 USD = 5.33 UAH 1 EURO = 6.20 UAH Credit cards get wider used in Ukraine. Major hotels and restaurants accept them here.

Cost of living

The cost of living in Lviv is approximately as follows: 1. Room in hotel - 20-100 US$ per one night

  1. Hostel accommodation - 250-600 US$ for room per one year (depending on conditions)

  2. Private accommodation - 70-150 US$ per month

  3. Board (average cost of one meal):

Phones

Public telephones operate only for calls within the city. They work with the aid of a phone card, which is available for purchase at every post office and press kiosk. Long distance phone services are operated by Utel (Ukrainian Telecommunications). To make an interna­tional call from Ukraine, first dial 8. On hearing a second dial tone, proceed with 10, then country code, area code and phone number. For those calling from abroad, Ukraine's country code is 380, Lviv's city code is 322. For inter-city calls inside Ukraine, simply dial 8, wait for a second dial tone, then proceed with city code and number. You can bring along your GSM mobile phone, buy a SIM-card and receive your usual class of connection.

Post office Post offices are located all around the city. The Main Post Office is located at 1, Slovatskoho St.

Transport Trolleys/trams/busses Public transport in Lviv is often crowded. Tickets are sold during your ride:

UAH 0.80 - for little mini-vans called "marsh-rutka" UAH 0.50 - for trams and trolleys UAH 0.60 -for all other public busses.
