UNIVERSITY OF VETERINARY MEDICINE IN LVIV
Lviv State University (Academy) of Veterinary Medicine named after S.Z. Gzhytskyj is one of 17 higher educational institutions in the Ukrainian city of Lviv. It has its long and glorious history.
In
1772 Austria occupied the western part of Ukraine - the Eastern
Galicia with its capital city of Lviv. For the ensuring 146 years the
fate of Ukrainian population of Galicia was determined in Vienne (the
capital of Austria). In 1784 the Lviv University was opened, in which
teaching of veterinary medicine commenced. The first professor of
veterinary subjects was Georgius Chmel (1747-1805).
In 1881 the
independent veterinary school was established in Lviv with the
official name Kaiser-Royal Veterinary School and School for
horseshoeing together with clinic for animals in Lviv. In February
1885 the first five degrees of veterinary surgeons were given. On 31
December 1896 Lviv Veterinary School received a status of school of
higher education - Academy (University). In September 1908 Academy
received the right to grant doctor of veterinary medicine degrees and
for special merits - doctor honoris causa.
In 1994 the Academy was added the name of prominent scientist - Prof. Stepan Gzhytskyj.
At present the University has five faculties of full-time instruction - veterinary medicine, animal husbandry (opened in 1949), sanitation and food technology (1991), the faculty of pre-academic studies (2001), the faculty of marketing and management (2002). There are also a faculty of postgraduate studies and faculty of correspondence instructional courses. The University has 34 departments, a course of diseases of small domestic animals, and 4 scientific-research institutes. In 2002/ 2003 academic year the University had 2200 full-time students and 1800 extramural students. The teaching staff numbered 280 persons, including 40 professors and doctors of sciences, 210 associate professors and candidates of sciences, 30 assistants.
The Academy trains specialists on the following specialties and specializations: veterinary medicine, ichthyopathology, diseases of small animals, veterinary pharmacology, zooengineering, bee-keeping,


fish-keeping, fur-farming, poultry-farming, meat processing, milk processing, technology of fat, technology of skin and fur, veterinary and sanitary expertise, marketing, management.
The University's professors Stepan Gzhytskyj, Ivan Holovatskyj and Fedir Palfij, Stepan Stoyanovskyj, Halyna Zvereva, Danylo Vasylenko, Mykhailo Demchuk created scientific schools of biochemists, physiologists, veterinary obstetricians, livestock feeders and clinicians. Under the leadership of Prof. Roman Kravtsiv the research of radiation pollution and radiological examination of animal products and micro elemental nourishment of animals in the conditions of post-Chornobyl disaster is earned out. The scientists of University support close relations with scientists and educational institutions of Poland, Austria, the USA, Canada, Slovakia, Czech Republic.
The University has 9 educational buildings, scientific library with two reading halls, sport complex, two educational and research farms, four student dormitories, work and relaxation camp including boarding-house in the Carpathian Mountains.
The University is authorized to confer university degree - Candidate of Sciences (Philosophiae Doctor) and Doctor of Sciences (Doctor habilitated).
